The ADL’s Disgrace

We never thought we’d see Sharpton embraced by Jews, but that’s what’s transpiring now as the Anti-Defamation League strays onto the Reverend’s turf—leading a boycott campaign against one of the most successful Jewish-owned businesses in the world. Its CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, has tapped Sharpton as a partner in a political project to police objectionable speech that both are trying to cast as a modern civil rights issue.
Sharpton has come a long way. So has the ADL.

As a “new antisemitism” casts the Jewish state as the cruelest of nations, and her Jewish supporters as “racists,” the ADL has been largely silent. The lies are spread in newspapers, churches and college classrooms. On campuses, Jewish students are harassed and intimidated. Even the curricula in many public high schools and middle schools is biased against Israel. Yet the ADL, once the Jewish people’s defense agency, seems unable or unwilling to effectively fight back.

It’s enormously frustrating when the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) – which should be working with us―instead undermines the pro-Israel community’s efforts to combat antisemitism. Too often, ADL gives a “free pass” to Islamist, BLM, and other left wing antisemitism. ADL now appears ready to hand out “free passes” to radical Islamist antisemites on college campuses, during ADL’s new partnership with Hillel.

Law professor and "Legal Insurrection" author William Jacobson joins JNS editor-in-chief Jonathan Tobin to discuss how intersectionality and critical race theory are destroying academic freedom and enabling anti-Semitism.
The two discuss the way cancel culture, fueled by leftist ideology, is distorting the educational system, undermining academic freedom and creating an atmosphere in which both liberals and conservatives are afraid to speak up.
In this excerpt professor Jacobson discusses the failure of Jewish organizations and ADL in particular to oppose Critical Race Theory, Intersectionality and other pernicious ideas that promote antisemitism.

In the first of APT’s 2021 webinar series on failed Jewish leadership, Charles Jacobs interviews Prof. William A. Jacobson of Cornell Law School and “Legal Insurrection,” and Jonathan S. Tobin, the editor-in-chief of the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS). They both give their unique and experienced perspectives on how the American Jewish establishment’s crown jewel, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), has consistently failed to carry out its mission of defending American Jews, preferring to simply be a mouthpiece for fashionable leftist maxims, which have nothing to do with Judaism.

It’s becoming obvious to most in the Jewish community that we are living in a state of siege. Look around. Practically every Jewish building and institution in America has security. College campuses are hostile territories; Jewish students are under attack by a hateful axis of radical faculty, Stalinist students, and Muslim extremists. Jews are being beaten in Brooklyn. Where is all this going?

Episode 1: “Commentary” Magazine Smashes ADL’s Greenblatt

Americans for Peace and Tolerance

Welcome to the inaugural episode of APT’s new podcast series — a place where we’ll be discussing the issues and the threats facing the Jewish community today.
“There will be a reckoning.” Those are the words of John Podhoretz, editor of “Commentary” Magazine, one of American Jewry’s most respected intellectual journals. John Podhoretz aimed those words at Jonathan Greenblatt, who is the head of the Anti-Defamation League.
The ADL is one of the most prominent Jewish organizations in America and its mission is to defend the Jewish community. But as more and more Jews have been noticing, under Jonathan Greenblatt, the ADL seems more concerned with defending progressives and the Democratic Party than defending Jews. And so in the face of mounting physical and verbal attacks on Jews in New York, mostly by black Americans, Podhoretz describes the flaccid response of the ADL to the surge of Jew-hatred in New York, and he can’t help getting a bit emotional.*
What’s important about this, is that it shows that more and more prominent Jews are seeing the failure of the mainstream Jewish leadership.
Episode 2: Prominent Jewish Columnist Denounces ADL Head
Charles Jacobs
Americans for Peace and Tolerance
January 17, 2020
5m:45s
In this APT podcast, Dr. Charles Jacobs recounts his trip to New York where thousands of Jews turned out on January 5, 2020, to march in solidarity with the city’s besieged Orthodox community. He also describes his disappointment in the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), one of the march’s main organizers, for making the march about just hatred in general — not anti-Semitism. This demonstrates how the ADL is conforming to a current trend in Democratic Party circles, where hatred of Jews is drowned in a soup of many other hatreds whenever officially condemned.
He also reads excerpts from an article by JNS editor Jonathan Tobin, who has specifically excoriated the ADL’s openly partisan CEO Jonathan Greenblatt for focusing on progressive causes instead of protecting Jews.*

American Jewish leaders, such as they are, often extend greater efforts crusading on behalf of other communities rather than their own.
Jew haters apparently know there are no costs to repackaging age-old anti-Semitic libels.
Jewish advocacy has gone corporate, answerable to a Board of Directors, fearful of fickle consumers, and obsessed with product placement. Calling attention to African-Americans or Muslims assaulting Jews will lead to accusations of racism or Islamophobia. And that would be bad for their brand.

How did we reach this point where political ideology outweighs what should be unified Jewish support for Israel?
Under the rubric of tikkun olam, they instead embraced progressivism as a universalized view that allowed them to disassociate themselves from mainstream Judaism and Zionism, which they could then disparage as being too parochial as opposed to their wider vision of caring for all of humanity.
Ironically, officials charged with enforcing “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” are among the worst promoters of anti-Jewish propaganda.

At the same time that the ADL has done little to oppose left-wing anti-Semitism, which is what dominates college campuses, while criticizing the Jewish community for standing up to anti-Semitism, Greenblatt has turned the organization into an active political partisan.
Essentially, Greenblatt has transformed the ADL from a non-partisan advocate for Jews confronting anti-Semitism into an advocacy organization for left-wing and culture-war causes.

Almost from the moment he took over in 2014, the ADL has been mired in accusations of political bias, of providing cover for anti-Semites on the left from the kind of accountability the organization doggedly pursues for anyone on the right. Those accusations are true. But the organization is in the middle of a more consequential turn. To gain admission to the new progressive pantheon, the ADL has found itself compelled to jettison its century-old mission and become a different kind of organization entirely.

The Clarion Project works with local law enforcement, including the U.S. government. In so doing, they have saved thousands of lives. Sadly, the ADL now seems to focus most of it resources on promoting LGBT rights and supporting the Democratic party’s overblown war on white supremacists and away from black anti-Semitism rather than drilling down on antisemitism. In fact, the ADL’s 2021 “Murder and Extremism in the United States” report is receiving criticism for allegedly covering up Black, Nation of Islam, and Muslim antisemitism for political and ideological reasons instead of drilling down into the actual evidence.

The “anti-bias” emphasis rings deeply ironic. No Place for Hate encourages schools to spread the watchwords of modern progressivism—microaggressions, equity (not equality), social justice—while training students for political activism. The whole program functions as an overt, unselfconscious, textbook example of bias in education.

When Whoopi Goldberg said the Holocaust wasn’t about race, because Nazis and Jews were both white, she voiced what has become unquestioned truth in today’s progressive circles. The ADL, an organization founded to fight Jew-hatred, is complicit.
